The Sikorski-X2 has broken the helicopter world speed record. It has now been clocked at an amazing 430kph or 267mph!
Contrary to traditional helicopters having a single propeller rotating on the top of the body, the Sikorski-X2 does not fit into the category of rotary-wing aircraft. The X2 has a compound coaxial rotor system which consists of two counter-rotating rotors that spin around the same axis, one positioned above the other. Also, compared to traditional helicopters which have the back prop
attached to one side of and spinning parallel to the tail, the X2 possesses a pusher propeller perpendicular to the tail and fitted at the rear which can be used to either slow down or speed up the helicopter snappily. This allows the Sikorsky-X2 to land on short runways; such runways are very common in third world countries.
